Lesson Overview
Our lopez 5th graders were challenged to create a clay vessel using coils. The project introduces students to different methods of clay building. Students were pre-assessed with a Kahoot quiz of the elements and principles. We looked at and discussed various clay works from different cultures around the world. We focused primarily on native american pottery from the southwest. Students planned their vessels by creating ten different sketches. Students used templates if there plan was for a symmetrical pot. Students began their clay vessels with a slab base. It is important with all clay pots or vessels to begin with a strong foundation. Students used the score and slip method to attach all of their coils together. We discussed the firing process with ceramic work. Students chose their glaze and surface treatment and their work was fired. For reflection students participated in a gallery walk, giving constructive feedback and notes to their classmates. We ended the project with a self-reflection, 3-2-1 worksheet. Students identified three things they learned, two things they did well, and one thing they would change.
