Lesson Overview
"Draw to Discover" in an observation drawing investigation. Students began learning basic drawing techniques like holding a pencil, shading, contour, blind contour, value, and form. This lesson eventually graduates to using materials like charcoal pencils, blending stumps, and chalk pastels. We began the lesson with a pre-assessment kahoot quiz, where student were tested on their previous knowledge of elements and principles of art and design. Through the lesson students explored different shading techniques and drawing from what we see, not what our brain thinks something looks like. Students were challenged with drawing and shading techniques beginning with simple forms like a spheres and fruit. Students transitioned to drawing more complex forms like portraits of their shoes. Students looked at important historical still-life artists and completed at vocabulary definition list. Students reflected on their work and progress via a mid project critique. The final product of this unit was the completion of a full still life drawing from observation. Upon completion each student reflected on his or her work, thinking about learning and process.
