Why this Course Exists:
The existence of this course is firmly established through a number of local, state, and national standards and beliefs for teacher education. A close examination will reveal the careful alignment of our unit’s beliefs for teacher education, the Colorado State Department of Education Performance-based Teacher Education Standards, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education Performance Indicators, the INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) standards, and the NCATE (National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education) standards. This course addresses, in detail, a portion of the State’s eight Performance-based Teacher Education standards and the specific 45 standard elements contained within, while also encompassing other state and national standards and beliefs as described in the brochure.

My Experience
EDUC 450 – Instruction II – Standards and Assessment is the third phase of the Center for Educator Preparation Program at Colorado State University. This phase focuses on the Colorado Quality Teaching Standards and assessment in secondary education. This phase centers students at the High School Level. I spent the last semester at Thompson Valley High School working directly with faculty and students in Matt Crawford’s painting I and drawing II classes. In these classes we were required to teach two lessons. The class challenged and forced my growth as a student and educator. My specialty lies in 3D sculpture so teaching painting and drawing forced me outside of my comfort zone. I believe in a student driven classroom with facilitation by the teacher. This allows for exploration and buy-in from the students when executed correctly. EDUC 450 focused in hands-on work with students and tutoring. We completed Avid (tutoring) training with a focus on “love and logic”. Some main concepts of the course were climate and culture, management plans, student data analysis, and assessment. This classroom experience furthered my knowledge of the classroom.
